The Program

Founded and developed by Rashid Johnson and Sheree Hovsepian, the Residency at Casa Gràcia is an opportunity for artists and writers to dedicate focused time to their own practice in an inspired setting in the historic city of Mahon.

DURATION

Each year boasts five residencies: three visual artists are invited for stays of up to three months, and two writers for stays of up to six months.

WORKSPACE

Visual artists have access to a beautiful, newly-renovated studio with soaring ceilings and tons of natural light. Writers enjoy a private floor of the residence that includes their bedroom and study.

ACCOMMODATION

Residents and their guests are welcome to stay at Casa Gràcia, a graciously- appointed private home on a quiet street in the heart of the Menorcan capital, just steps from markets, restaurants, cultural centers, and the largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean.

EXPECTATIONS

Residencies are self-directed without obligation to produce an outcome or public presentation. Instead, we encourage creative development and deep reflection, while fostering meaningful engagement with the local community.

SUSTAINABILITY

We ask all artists and writers in residence to share our commitment to sustainable practices, reducing air travel, minimizing waste, and promoting reuse of materials where possible, as well as respecting the local environment and its rich biodiversity.

SUPPORT

In addition to providing living accommodations, studio space, all utilities, and a weekly cleaning service, some residents will qualify for a modest stipend, and all will have at their disposal the knowledge and support of the local team at Hauser & Wirth Menorca, a cultural center with active exhibition and learning programs.

"Menorca has offered me something rare: a sense of slowness, clarity, and openness that allows thought and creativity to expand. I first came here years ago through my relationship with Hauser & Wirth and was deeply moved by the island’s beauty, history, and rhythm. Creating this residency is an opportunity to share that experience with other artists — to offer a place for reflection, experimentation, conversation, and renewal. I hope artists who spend time here will find, as I did, that Menorca has a quiet but profound way of sharpening attention and deepening one’s relationship to making.”
